Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation of the cheeks, nose, forehead, chin, or eyelids. It may cause redness, visible blood vessels, or small pustules similar to acne.

Rosacea symptoms vary from person to person. Some people may experience redness only in the face, while others may exhibit symptoms on the ears, neck, or back.

What are the causes?
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it may be related to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Rosacea most often affects females who are fair skinned and between the ages of 30 and 50.

Rosacea can be aggravated by a number of factors that increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, including:

1) Spicy foods
2) Alcohol
3) Sunlight
4) Stress, embarrassment or anger
5) Extreme temperatures
6) Hot baths or saunas
7) Medications that dilate blood vessels
8) Strenuous exercise
What are the treatments?
Although there is no cure for rosacea, some topical and oral medications can help relieve symptoms. Antibiotics may help control skin eruptions. Products containing retinoids may also provide relief. In some cases, laser treatments such as BBL can reduce redness and treat visible blood vessels. Rosacea is not acne and will not respond to over-the-counter acne treatments.
